Case in point: For some reason or another I got shut out of shooting the Maiden show in Jersey. After being asked not to bring any cameras into the venue with removable lenses, I figured I might as well bring along the G9.

We were in row 20 from the stage with pretty good sight lines but no way to get a clear or steady shot. I set the camera on aperture priority and started firing at whatever I could get. If I timed the shot with the lights, I could get some decent highlights, but the grain at 800 and 1600 sucked. Luckily, a little post processing and some creative license later and I think we have some usable shots.

These are definitely not tack sharp shots taken with my 24-70mm L lens, but they are better than nothing. Or at least, better than the army of camera phone shooters I had to dodge.

I got a nice pick up by IronMaiden.com. Take a look here. I guess I’m not good enough to get a press pass, but good enough to land above Rolling Stone and The New York Times on Maiden’s own site. Go figure.

Hero Worship: Mick Jones

Last night, I got the rare opportunity to photograph one of my heroes at a club that holds 350 people. Chances like these don’t pop up to often, and when you get the call that Clash guitar slinger Mick Jones is in town with his new band, you come running. The show was at my favorite club in the whole world, the Asbury Lanes, and the band rocked for an hour and a half solid. He tore through most of the stuff off of his new record Carbon Silicon, which sounds a lot like The Clash and not alot like BAD. That’s a good thing. Read the rest of this entry »

Anyone who shoots photos for more than just fun must check out Adobe’s photo management system Lightroom. The program is the ultimate workflow tool and has been a godsend since I downloaded the beta version over a year ago. Prior to using Lightroom, I pretty much just dumped everything into iphoto and exported the few photos that I thought were worth playing with in photoshop. Now, I have seamless integration between CS3, Bridge, and Lightroom. Read the rest of this entry »

One of the worst clubs in the world to take photos at is the Asbury Lanes in lovely Asbury Park, NJ. Don’t get me wrong, this vintage bowling alley is a rockabilly wonderland teeming with fantastic live music, ’50s flair, and great food and beer. However, the lighting above the stage consists of three crappy yellow lights burning down on the band. Read the rest of this entry »

I got the rare opportunity to photograph a wrestling event from ring side this past Saturday and nearly lot my head in the process. I, along with six or seven other photographers were crammed in a tiny photo pit on one side of a ragtag wrestling ring all vying for the same shots.

At one point, a giant four-armed monster came flying at me. I saw him through my lens and immediately swung left to avoid having my camera cracked. Too bad I didn’t notice that girl standing next to me who got a face full of Canon 24-70mm. She was okay, but I still felt terrible.

Time to get my gear insured.

The show was fantastic. For those not in the know, Kaiju Big Battel is an art house wrestling league made up of dudes in large monster costumes. They fight for good and evil and basically destroy everything in their path. This week, they took over Webster Hall in New York City and packed the 1,400 person room to capacity.

Styrofoam cityscapes of Manhattan were trashed, giant bunnies were creamed, and a zombie plantain won my heart.

Davey Havok, AFI

I couple of months back I posted my most popular photo based on stock purchases, but I just took a look at my Flickr stats and this is by far the most popular photo I’ve ever taken (at least among the under 18 and female set). Like the description says, I snapped this photograph of Davey while he was chatting with my friend Sharon during an Offspring show. I’m pretty sure they opened the show up and the place was packed. But, no one gave a hoot about AFI at the time and my friend was dying to have a non-dorky photo of her talking with him.

It’s still one of my favorite photographs. I believe I took it with my trust Nikon Zoom Touch 470 AF in either 1996 or 1997.

What did you do for New Year’s Eve? I eschewed the usual parties and ball watching to check out the best show going down in NYC–Gogol Bordello. Led by the enigmatic and ultra-cool Eugene Hutz, Gogol Bordello are a gypsy punk group that perform every show as if it’s their last performance ever. High intensity barely begins to describe it. The singer flies around stage, passing the mic to the crowd or strumming wildly on his guitar. His fiddler is a bow-wielding maniac, and I won’t even get into the dancers and percussion team.
