Kid Robot celebrated the release of its 8″ Greed Dunny and Toy Baroness’s 29th Birthday in style with a huge bash at New York’s Knitting Factory. Artists and luminaries came out in droves to party with friends and rock out to a live performance by Spank Rock. Tim Biskup manned the turntables as hundreds of costumed Kid Robot devotees danced the night away.

I just realized that I never posted a final review of my ScanCafe experience. Well, after nearly three months of waiting, I received a nice little box from ScanCafe with a fancy DVD (full-size case with custom art) and my original photos in the shoddy packaging I had originally sent them in.

After dropping all the photos from the DVD into Lightroom, it’s safe to say that ScanCafe did a stellar job scanning and cleaning these 28 year old snapshots. The color restoration is better than the test scans I tried on my Epson scanner (which took nearly 20 minutes a photo) and the level of grain is as good (or bad) as one would expect from aging photos. Halo Effect

I occasionally get called to photograph my friends’ pets. I’ve never been paid to do it, but I’m tempted to take on pet photography as a I side job. This photo was shot with my new Canon G9 with no flash in the afternoon. The halo around the Zelda’s head works as a really nice softbox, diffusing the sun pouring in through the picture window. Joshua Liner’s new gallery opened up last week and the place was packed with people and great work. I had a blast photographing dozens of artists that attended the VIP previews, and probably fired off more than 400 photos over the course of the three hour event.

Photographing people at galleries can be a giant pain in the ass. Most of the lighting is focused on the paintings, so you have to shoot with flash to avoid losing the detail in peoples’ faces. Luckily most galleries have all white walls and ceilings, so you can bounce the flash off of anything. I usually leave the white balance on auto and just adjust all the photos en masse in Lightroom after the fact.

Luckily, Liner had a ton of lighting (and air conditioning) overhead, allowing me to drop the ISO to 400. This was one of the easier gallery events to shoot and there was a ton of subjects to capture on film.

Fun with Depth of Field

Sure, shooting parties is fun, but how many times can you take the same photo of people laughing and posing with beer? I decided to switch things up a little at a group opening at Jonathan Levine this past Friday. Here’s a shot of Carlo McCormick’s son Tristan with all focus on the kid. I was trying to recreate something similar to the photo of Andy Warhol and his mother.

Hero Worship: Mick Jones

Last night, I got the rare opportunity to photograph one of my heroes at a club that holds 350 people. Chances like these don’t pop up to often, and when you get the call that Clash guitar slinger Mick Jones is in town with his new band, you come running. The show was at my favorite club in the whole world, the Asbury Lanes, and the band rocked for an hour and a half solid. He tore through most of the stuff off of his new record Carbon Silicon, which sounds a lot like The Clash and not alot like BAD. That’s a good thing. Read the rest of this entry »

Wrestling with the Stars

Wrestlemania might have come and gone, but I’m still shocked that I got the opportunity to photograph last week’s WWE press conference. I felt like paparazzi, fighting it out to get the best shot, but it was so worth it. For the record, the Big Show really is that gigantic and Triple H is an absolutely awesome guy when he isn’t power slamming someone.

Anyone who shoots photos for more than just fun must check out Adobe’s photo management system Lightroom. The program is the ultimate workflow tool and has been a godsend since I downloaded the beta version over a year ago. Prior to using Lightroom, I pretty much just dumped everything into iphoto and exported the few photos that I thought were worth playing with in photoshop. Now, I have seamless integration between CS3, Bridge, and Lightroom. Read the rest of this entry »
